Fleas

Most species of fleas in the UK are cat fleas, dog fleas, and, to a lesser degree, human fleas. They live off blood from warm-blooded animals, and although they have a preferred host e.g. cat fleas on cats and dog fleas on dogs. They can and do feed off other animals, including humans. The complete breeding cycle, from the laying of eggs to growing into an adult flea, takes approximately 4 weeks.

If your cat or dog is scratching excessively, thoroughly inspect their entire coat. Using a flea comb will help with this. Also, inspect their bedding. Flea bites on humans normally show as small red bumps with a red halo around the centre. These bites are quite common on the lower legs and ankles, although they can also be found on other parts of the body. Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are blood-feeding insects, normally red/brown in colour. They are mainly nocturnal, but will also feed during the day, and live for a period of between 9 and 18 months providing that food is available. Bed bugs are experts at concealment and hide virtually anywhere, including in picture frames, bedside cabinets, cracks in plaster, and behind loose wallpaper. However, they are normally found where they have the most chance of feeding, such as behind bed, head and tailboards, in the frame of the bed, and around the mattress.

They will emerge and feed from the host before going back into hiding. Their presence not only causes discomfort from the bites, but if they are not treated, they will multiply and can potentially spread throughout the property. Cockroaches

There are 2 main species of cockroach in the UK: the German cockroach and the oriental cockroach. They hide in cracks and crevices and are not usually seen during daylight hours. Cockroaches will feed on almost anything, including faecal matter, refuse, and most food stocks. However, they can survive without food for several months, although they do need to drink.

The oriental cockroach is light brown in colour and approximately 3cm in length, while the German cockroach is light brown and approximately 1.2cm in length.
